What is the experience of USA eczema sufferers?

You might be asking yourself, “how does my eczema compare to others”. Ceraclere™, a company dedicated to using skin science to develop topical products that improve the treatment of barrier-related skin diseases, like eczema, conducted a survey of 100 eczema sufferers to get answers to this question. This is a large enough sample size that allows us to say that the numbers presented accurately represents the USA eczema sufferer experience within +/- 10%.

First, atopic dermatitis is a significant problem for many people in the USA. According to the National Eczema Association, 16.9 million people in the U.S. suffer from atopic dermatitis (AD). This means 4.9% of the US population has AD. It is the most common form of eczema. Comparing this figure to other conditions helps to define the enormity of scale for this disease. The number of AD sufferers is nearly the same as the number of people who have cancer (18.6 M), almost half as many people who have chronic lung disease (35M), and 33% of the number of people who get the flu (51M). There are over twice as many people suffering from AD as are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

To help understand the USA eczema experience, we asked “how many flares do you get at one time? 84% of patients indicate they get more than 1 eczema flare at a time. Only 16% have 1 flare. 59% of the time patients have 2 or 3 flares at once. And unfortunately, 25% of patients report having more than 4 flares at a time.

Another question we asked was “how big are your flares?”. 54% or over half of the respondents indicated that their flares are 2 square inches or less. 42% of eczema sufferers had flare sizes between 2 and 4 square inches. Thankfully, only 4% had flares that were bigger than 4 square inches.

I hope this helps you understand how your eczema experience compares to others. In a future post we will provide more information on the eczema sufferer survey results.
